According to preliminary information released by the National Transportation Safety Board, a broken rail just east of the bridge over I-25 caused the coal train to rerail near Pueblo on Sunday.

Investigators will continue to determine the cause of the broken rail and why warning systems did not alert crews to the condition of the track.

I-25 remains closed at mile marker 109 which is about 4 miles north of Pueblo. There is no estimate on when the interstate will reopen. A detour route has been set up using Highways 50 and 115 through Penrose.

Drivers are saying that the drive from Colorado Springs to Pueblo is taking 2 hours.
