A new Colorado law signed yesterday will allow drivers to voluntarily contribute an extra $5 during vehicle registration renewals to help fund the construction of wildlife crossings across the state.

The program is set to begin January 1, 2027, and is designed to support projects that improve safety for both motorists and wildlife.

The legislation was inspired by the strong success rate of existing wildlife crossing infrastructure throughout Colorado. According to the Colorado Department of Transportation, wildlife crossings combined with extended stretches of fencing that guide animals toward safe passage areas have reduced wildlife-related vehicle crashes by nearly 90 percent in areas where the systems are installed.

State officials say the added funding could help expand similar projects in high-risk corridors across Colorado.
