In their meeting this week, Chaffee County Commissioners approved several properties in Garfield for commercial use. The vote was approved despite opposition from neighboring property owners and Commissioner, P.T. Wood.

Shane Corrigan submitted the application seeking to develop a hostel and other resources to serve recreational visitors to Monarch Pass. Colorado Trail hikers frequently hike through the area but have limited access to lodging, transportation and supplies.

Wood opposed the application, arguing that rezoning individual properties without addressing the surrounding area would create undesirable spot zoning rather than supporting a broader plan that serves the surrounding community.

Residents expressed concern over trespassing, future overdevelopment and sacrificing the character of the neighborhood.

Commissioner, Gina Lucrezi said she supports the development of small businesses in the area.

Access and feasibility of Corrigans’s plan were also questioned. A formal rezoning resolution expected on a subsequent agenda.
