The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is marking May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, urging both riders and drivers to make safety a priority.
In 2023, 165 motorcyclists were killed on Colorado roads—the highest ever recorded. Since 2015, motorcycle fatalities have increased by 57%, and last year they accounted for nearly 25% of all traffic deaths, despite motorcycles making up just 3% of vehicles.
Motorcyclists are encouraged to always wear helmets and protective gear. Drivers should remain especially alert at intersections where most motorcycle collisions occur.
On May 12, CDOT, Colorado State Patrol, and families affected by crashes will hold a press conference to address the spike in fatalities and highlight efforts to improve safety across the state.
