The Salida City Council held a work session last night where the lone agenda item was a discussion with Salida Fire Chief Doug Bess concerning possible alternative public displays for Independence Day.

Four alternatives were being considered:  have a drone display, a laser show, hire an outside company to put on a fireworks show, or continue as normal with the city putting on a fireworks show.

Bess told council that the Salida Business Alliance was unanimous for keeping fireworks and a majority of respondents to a poll on the fire departments Facebook page was also in favor of keeping fireworks.  Those if favor of fireworks cited tradition, community pride and trust in the fire department.  Those opposed cited wildlife concerns, pets, trash and harm to individuals with PTSD.

A city sponsored fireworks display will take place this July 4th, conditions permitting.

The Salida City Council will conduct a regular meeting tonight beginning at 6 pm.
