Beloved coach and Alamosa native Joe Vigil passed away last week, leaving behind a profound legacy in the world of track and field and cross-country.

Dr. Vigil was the longtime head coach at Adams State, where he led the men’s program from 1965 to 1993, guiding the team to an astonishing 19 national collegiate championships. His leadership, mentorship, and passion for the sport earned him legendary status not only at Adams State but across the running community nationwide.

Coach Vigil was also one of the four founding fathers of USA Track & Field, helping shape the sport into what it is today. His dedication to excellence inspired countless athletes and coaches, encouraging them to strive for greatness—both on and off the course.

His legacy will endure through the generations he mentored, the records he helped set, and the lives he profoundly changed.
