The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents to an ongoing scam involving fake arrest warrants and fraudulent demands for payment over the phone.
According to officials, scammers contact individuals claiming there is an active arrest warrant in their name and insist that immediate payment is required to avoid being taken into custody. In some cases, the callers are able to spoof the Sheriff’s Office phone number, making the call appear legitimate.
The Sheriff’s Office emphasizes that law enforcement agencies will never demand payment over the phone, accept payments through gift cards or electronic transfers, or threaten arrest via phone calls or text messages.
Residents who receive a call of this nature are urged not to send money or provide any personal information. Anyone who believes they have been targeted by this scam should report the incident to local authorities.
Officials encourage the public to remain vigilant and share this information to help prevent others from falling victim to the scam.
