August 15, 1955 ~ July 13, 2024
Guy Lloyd Rains died July 13,2024 at home in hospice care from bladder cancer.
He was born in Albuquerque NM in 1955. He became fascinated with fishing at the first sight of a dried-up dead carp in the bottom of a boat in Clovis NM. His Dad surprised him with his own fishing rod on his 9th birthday in his family’s humble Colorado beginnings at a campsite outside Poncha Springs.
Guy graduated with what may have been the most fun Salida High School Class of ’73. His first job after high school was with his Uncle Ivan Wolfe drilling wells in Wyoming. He went on to join the Army and served as a surveyor in Alaska. He married Dawn Donner (Hibbard) in 1975. They lived in Alaska where Guy worked for the Army Corp of Engineers on the North Slope. He went on to work for Cut No Slak Construction as a bookkeeper and office manager. Guy was in a car accident in 1978 while Dawn and him were down visiting the lower 48, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. Their daughter Twyla Rains was born shortly after. Later divorced, they continued caring about one another, often through their daughter. A testament to his belief one should take responsibility for one’s own health, he lived free of doctor’s visits for most of it, which pleased him.
He loved the outdoors and took every opportunity to be in it. Guy had many interests including fishing, shooting, traveling, and hunting everything from elk, rocks, mushrooms, gold, to arrowheads, especially on our public lands. He was a straight shooter and deeply valued that same quality in others.
He would often be found visiting with friends at restaurants from First Street Café, Patio, Mountain Phoenix Coffee Shop, Fifty Burger, 4th Street Diner to Romeo’s. Guy led by example, inspiring many he came in touch with through his full life.
Guy was a devoted Dad to his daughter, always supporting her and encouraging her to listen to the Holy Spirit. They had countless adventures and laughs together, traveling all over from Colorado to the Southwest, to Florida, to Alaska. He was an extraordinary Dad, dog lover, patriot, bird watcher, and truly free man that will be dearly missed.
Guy was proceeded in death by his brother Terry Rains, father Dennis Rains, and mother Betty Rains. He is survived by his daughter Twyla Rains and son in law Steve McClung, niece Carissa Rains, and many other cherished relatives and friends.
