Golf starts the season off

Two golf tournaments are in the books, with another getting started this morning in Montrose as Buena Vista and Salida hit the links to get their seasons under way.

The opening tournament of the year for both was in Florence at Sumo, and the Spartans and Demons both battled intense conditions over a long day on the course.

Buena Vista would lead the way with Cole Reavis shooting an 86 for 10th place. Kik Molitor began his season with an 88, finishing in a tie for 12th. The top three for the Demons would be rounded out by Chandler Smethers, who’s 91 netted him 16th. The team score for the Demons has them in fourth place in the tri-peaks league after a total of 265.

The rest of the Demon crew wrapped up with Leyton Chupp shooting a 95 to tie for 21st, Max Johnson shooting a 101 for 26th and Scott Groy who’s 108 was good for 32nd.

For the Salida Spartans, the season started off a little rough, but with a young team it was to be expected. Miles Murphy led the way with a solid 92 finishing in 17th place. Jake Hergerts 114 put him in 37th place and Isaac Lagree’s 116 was good for 41st. CT Bainbridge returned with a 119 for 43rd. As a team, the Spartans 322 has them in 9th place out of 13 teams at on the day.

Spartans at Canon City on Tuesday

On Tuesday, the Spartans were on the road again in Canon City as they would put up a respectable 13th place finish out of 16 teams on the day.

The tournament had a bigger field and crowd, including several 4A and 5A teams, so the tournament provided a high level of competition.

Aiden Hadley would lead Salida with a 99 putting him tied for 35th. Cayden Horton shot a 106 to finish in a tie for 43rd and Brandon Purcell would wrap up the three scores taken from Salida with a 108 finishing tied for 49th. Caleb Burton’s 123 wrapped up the day with a 57th place finish.
