Demon girls take the show at Cheyenne Mountain Stampede

The Buena Vista Demon girls cross country team finished 33 points ahead of second place Wray to take the Cheyenne Mountain Stampede Saturday.

Buena Vista was led by Zaila Smith who ran the course in a time of 19:32 to win the event. Mallory Salazar, Molly McMurry and Alexis Santa-Pietro would finish 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively to round out the team score, with Kadance Kelso finishing 11th to wrap up the team run.

On the boys side, it was Rosston Sherlock who led the Demons with a 6th place finish and a time of 18:24. Isaac Hutchings earned a top 20 spot and Jack Helmke finished in 24th. Tam Flowers and Sammy Star rounded out the Demon five with 46th and 49th place finishes. As a team, the Demons would take 5th place.

The Salida Spartans also saw good results on both the boys and girls sides, with top 10 team finishes in both.

The boys were led by Elijah Wilcox and his 8th place finishing time of 17:21. Kuper Banghart finished in 23rd followed by Izayah Baxter in 39th, both with sub-20 minute times. Tristan Jackson would take 60th, Jack Landry 75th and Otis Shin 89th to end the day for the Spartan boys.

On the girls side, a trio led the way, with Fern Clark taking 33rd to lead Salida, followed closely by Lanee Dziura in 37th and Alex Hebert in 39th. Not far off and adding to the team score were Ella Haynes in 49th and Kaylynn Shaffer in 55th. Lane Baker would wrap up the runners for the Salida girls with a 73rd place finish.

Custer County also was at the meet, and their boys were paced by Micah Zeller, who would take 2nd place with a time of 17:16. The rest of the team ran well as a pack, finishing with Tristan Greenhagen in 56th, Jonah Carichner in 60th, Harrison Walter in 61st and Tanner Cruzen in 78th.

The Custer boys would finish 10th as a team with 17 in the field.

The girls only brought four to the meet, and while their 9th place out of 11 teams didn’t look great they would see good individual splits, with Brooke Bomgardner taking 22nd followed closely by Brooke Flynn in 23rd. Kaya Huffman and Katy Gifford finished in 54th and 56th to round out the team score.
