Dell Morfitt Obituary

Dell Herschel Morfitt, age 77, of Moffat, CO passed away on May 7, 2026 at his home surrounded by family. Dell was born June 10, 1948 in Sibley, Iowa to Delmar and Mary (Thorp) Morfitt. The family moved to Paxton, Nebraska where he lived for 13 years before they moved to La Garita, CO. The family resided in La Garita for half of Dell’s senior year, then moved to Moffat, CO at the McMann Burlington Rouzer Ranch. Dell graduated from Mountain Valley High School in 1966. He spent his summers alone cowboying on the range since he was 14, tending to sheep and cattle. He spent many years in the Cave Creek, Carnero Creek, Bowers Mountain and Boot Mountain areas tending cattle and in the Snow Mesa area of Creede tending to several bands of sheep. He left home to work in Leadville, CO where he drove heavy equipment but came back to the San Luis Valley to do what he loved most; cowboying, farming and outfitting in the Weminuche Wilderness. Dell has been a resident of Moffat for 60 years. He enjoyed hunting and guiding in the mountains, cowboying, raising mules and spending time in the mountains with his family. He eventually traded a horse for a UTV to continue on many outdoor adventures with his family. His love of horses and mules brushed off on his family and they all love to ride. He is keeping a horse saddled for each of you in heaven. He loved the outdoors and was content with a simple life full of hard work. Dell was preceded in death by his parents (Red and Mary Morfitt) and brother, Kent Morfitt. He is survived by his wife Yvonne Morfitt of Moffat, CO. Son Ethan (Leslie) Morfitt of Montana, daughters Rachael (Greg) Sanchez of Saguache, CO, Sara Morfitt of Moffat, CO and Laura Morfitt of Gunnison, CO. Grandchildren Antora Sanchez and Parker Morfitt. Memorial services are set for 10:00 on May 23, 2026 at the Crestone Baptist Church. Dell was a member of the Crestone Baptist Church.
