Cotopaxi Man Appears in Court After Shooting at Police

A Cotopaxi man accused of shooting at three police officers during a multi-jurisdictional pursuit made his first appearance yesterday in Teller County Court.  

36-year-old Chancey Colwell was arrested November 22, the day after the pursuit that began in Canon City and ended in Teller County.  He is being held in the Teller County Jail on a $1 million cash bond.   

Colwell is facing charges of first-degree attempted murder, criminal trespass, unlawful possession of a controlled substance, possession of a weapon by a previous offender, violation of a protection order, resisting arrest, and reckless endangerment.   

Colwell will face even more charges when extradited to Fremont County.   

Colwell was arrested for assaulting the Florence Police Chief in December 2015.  He was sentenced to four years in prison followed by 2 years of parole.
