Colorado Parks and Wildlife is reminding the public to stay alert as warmer temperatures bring rattlesnakes out of hibernation across the state.

Officials say snakes are commonly spotted stretched out on trails, using the open space to soak up sunlight and regulate their body temperature. As a result, hikers and outdoor enthusiasts are more likely to encounter them this time of year.

To stay safe, CPW recommends wearing sturdy hiking boots and long pants while on the trails. They also advise against using headphones, as being able to hear a rattlesnake’s warning rattle can help prevent a dangerous surprise.

Pet owners are urged to keep dogs on a leash at all times. Curious pets may try to approach or follow a rattlesnake, increasing the risk of a bite.

By taking a few simple precautions and staying aware of your surroundings, outdoor recreation can remain safe and enjoyable during rattlesnake season.
