The Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles is alerting residents to a new wave of fraudulent text messages impersonating the agency, as scammers attempt to steal personal and financial information.
According to officials, the DMV is aware of the scam and is working closely with the Governor’s Office of Information Technology to stop the activity. The messages falsely claim recipients have unpaid traffic tickets and threaten serious consequences unless immediate payment is made.
Authorities emphasize that these claims are completely false and are part of a phishing scheme designed to pressure individuals into sending money or sharing sensitive information.
Residents who receive a suspicious text message appearing to be from the DMV are urged to take the following precautions:
- Do not click on any links included in the message
- Do not respond or engage with the sender
- Do not provide any personal or financial information
Officials remind the public that legitimate government agencies will not demand payment or sensitive details through unsolicited text messages.
Anyone who believes they may have been targeted or fallen victim to the scam is encouraged to report the incident to local authorities.
