The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the U.S. Forest Service are now issuing permits for those who want to cut their own Christmas tree this holiday season.
Trees may only be harvested from designated areas on public lands, so officials urge residents to pick up a map from their local field office or download one online before heading out. Each permit costs $10.
Those planning to cut a tree should come prepared with a handsaw, eye protection, rope or twine, and extra food and blankets. Because winter conditions can be unpredictable, officials also recommend bringing tire chains, a shovel, and emergency supplies.
