Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office has launched the Blue Envelope Program, a voluntary initiative designed to help individuals with certain medical or cognitive conditions communicate more effectively with law enforcement during traffic stops or other interactions.

The program is intended to support people with conditions such as autism spectrum disorder, dementia, or seizure disorders. Participants are provided with a blue envelope that serves as a visible signal to officers that the individual may need additional patience, clearer communication, or specific accommodations, such as adjustments related to lights and sirens.

In addition to acting as a communication tool, the blue envelope can be used to store important documents, including a driver’s license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance, making them easier to access during an encounter.

Community members can obtain a Blue Envelope and an associated sticker at several local law enforcement agencies, including the Buena Vista Police Department and the Salida Police Department, as well as directly from the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials emphasize that participation in the program is completely voluntary. There is no registry or tracking component, and there is no cost to receive a Blue Envelope. The program is part of a broader effort to promote understanding, safety, and positive interactions between law enforcement and the community.
