Monday morning Chaffee County Search and Rescue South rescued an injured hiker at approximately 12,300 feet on Mt. Shavano.

The 52 year-old subject and her daughter were very well prepared for the mountain, but had a unfortunate run in with a loose rock. Occasionally even the best prepared summit attempt can end with a request for Search and Rescue.

CCSAR-S mobilized with a hasty team and requested mutual aid from Saguache County Search and Rescue for the predicted long carry out. The first team to reach the subject stabilized her, and began a big-wheel extraction back down the main trail. A combined team of Saguache County SAR and CCSAR-S met the big-wheel teams with ATV support and completed the extraction.

14 SAR members were fielded for the mission, which culminated at approximately 9:15 pm.
