The Chaffee County Landfill, in partnership with Spring Back Colorado, is now offering mattress recycling for local residents.
Through the program, old mattresses are taken apart by hand so their materials can be reused. Steel springs are melted down and recycled, foam is repurposed into carpet padding, wood is chipped for mulch, and mattress fibers are used for insulation and other industrial products.
Officials remind residents that mattresses brought in for recycling must be dry and free of mold and bed bugs.
