The Colorado Department of Transportation is urging both drivers and riders to stay alert, noting that 2026 is already shaping up to be the deadliest start to a year for motorcyclists since 2017.

The warning comes as Colorado approaches the “100 Deadliest Days” on the road—the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day—when traffic fatalities typically increase.

According to CDOT, 15 motorcyclists were killed between January and March of this year. Data also shows that 49% of riders killed in crashes over the past five years were not wearing a helmet at the time.

Officials add that motorcycle fatalities have risen by 90% over the past 15 years, underscoring the importance of safe driving habits and protective gear.
