With winter weather impacting mountain highways, the Colorado Department of Transportation is reminding commercial motor vehicle drivers that the state’s annual chain season is officially underway.

Under Colorado’s “Must Carry Law,” all commercial motor vehicle drivers are required to carry tire chains from September 1 through May 31. Drivers who fail to carry chains can face $500 fines, while those who block the roadway due to not chaining up may be fined up to $1,000.

Colorado’s updated Traction Law also remains in effect for personal vehicles. The law requires tires to have a tread depth of at least 3/16 of an inch on winter, all-weather, or mud-and-snow (M+S) tires. The requirement applies to all 4WD and AWD vehicles as well.

Drivers are encouraged to prepare their vehicles now to safely navigate winter conditions.
