CDC Announces Recommendation for Second COVID Vaccine for Older Adults

Chaffee County, CO- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released updated recommendations regarding the COVID annual vaccine for individuals ages 65 and older. In its latest guidance, the CDC advises that even if they got a COVID annual vaccine this fall, individuals ages 65 and older should get a second shot this spring.

This latest guidance, voted on by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and endorsed by the CDC, recommends that older adults should get a second COVID booster shot so long as at least four months have passed since their last COVID vaccine.

“Older adults continue to face the greatest disease burden from COVID-19. These new recommendations underscore the importance of protecting this vulnerable age group. A second shot offers an added layer of protection that many older adults desire,” says Andrea Carlstrom, Director of Chaffee County Public Health.

Chaffee County Public Health (CCPH) is awaiting the updated Interim Clinical Considerations from the CDC, which is expected by the beginning of next week. CCPH has ample supplies of the COVID-19 vaccine and encourages residents to call beginning Monday, March 3. CCPH offers a walk-in clinic in Salida from 12-4 on Mondays, a walk-in clinic in Buena Vista from 12-4 on Tuesdays, and can schedule vaccine appointments during immunization clinics on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Call CCPH’s main office during business hours at 719-539-4510 to make an appointment. Other vaccine providers are also available in Chaffee County and residents are encouraged to reach out to their healthcare providers as well.
