Cameron Peak Fire Now Largest in Colorado History

The Cameron Peak Fire is now the largest in Colorado history after winds yesterday fueled explosive growth to 158,000 acres.

Wind gusts as high as 75 mph were recorded yesterday at the Cameron Peak Fire west of Fort Collins, helping push the 2-month-old fire across 23,000 new acres.

The wildfire, which ignited August 13 and survived more than a foot of early September snow grew to 247 square miles and remains 56 percent contained.

Yesterday’s growth let to new evacuation orders in the Larimer County foothills in and around the communities of Glen Haven and Drake east of Rocky Mountain National Park.
