Emergency crews in Custer County have largely contained the Buttermilk Fire burning off County Road 182 northwest of Westcliffe.
According to officials, the fire was sparked when an aspen tree fell onto a power line. Authorities say the line’s automatic power restoration feature attempted to re-energize the line, which contributed to the ignition. In response, the Custer County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the automatic reconnect setting will be disabled for the remainder of the fire season.
As of the latest update last night, the fire had burned approximately 65 acres and reached 95% containment. No structures have been lost, and no injuries have been reported.
Crews remain on scene continuing containment and mop-up efforts. Officials also confirmed that all evacuation orders related to the fire have now been lifted.
