Buena Vista Demons run to 2A State Title; Lake County Panthers take second in girls race

The day went to the mountains in the girls 2A cross country race, as the Buena Vista Demons and Lake County Panthers went one-two at the CHSAA State Meet on Saturday.

The Demons were led by Mallory Salazar who finished in 3rd ahead of teammates Zaila Smith in 7th and Molly McMurry who took 12th.

Meanwhile, Lake County matched almost place for place with Adele and Rose Horning taking 5th and 6th to lead three Panthers into the top 15, with Keira King rounding out their top three.

Buena Vista’s Kadance Kelso was able to outpace Violet Hill as the final scorer for both sides and the Demons would edge the Panthers 31 – 41 in the final team scores to capture their first state title under Julia Fuller.

Custer County made a big splash on the boys scene, as Micah Zeller finished his high school career with a silver medal, turning in a sub 17 minute time to take second in his final race.

The Demons also saw senior Roston Sherlock finish his cross country career with an 8th place finish to lead the boys team to a 7th place finish. Lake County would also finish in the top ten as a team, taking 9th.

In the 3A race, the Salida boys also were able to push their way into the top ten, finishing 8th, led by junior Elijah Wilcox who turned in a 15th place finish. The Salida girls earned a 10th place finish as they were led by sophomore Quinn Smith who earned a 17th place spot.
