The murder trial of Barry Morphew has been postponed until 2027 after a judge granted the defense’s request for additional time to prepare the case.
During a hearing yesterday, Morphew’s attorneys told the court they are still reviewing what they described as a “mountain of discovery” and asked for the trial to be delayed. Prosecutors objected to the request, but the judge ruled in favor of the defense.
Barry Morphew is charged with the murder of his wife, Suzanne Morphew, who disappeared in May 2020. Her remains were discovered in 2023. Morphew has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The trial had been scheduled to begin in October in Alamosa.
A status conference was held yesterday to address the request for a continuance. Defense attorneys argued they need additional time to review the extensive evidence collected in the case.
Morphew’s next court hearing is scheduled for July 6, when the court is expected to set a new trial date.
As with all criminal cases, Barry Morphew is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
