Two backcountry skiers died on Saturday when they became buried in an avalanche near Vallecito Reservoir in La Plata County near Durango.

About 80 miles east, a second slide was triggered over the weekend, carrying a snowmobiler with it. The snowmobiler was hurt but survived. The avalanche was reported in the Hourglass Path near Wolf Creek Pass.

Last week’s heavy snow and continued high winds are combining to make dangerous avalanche conditions.

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center is rating the avalanche danger across the state as Moderate. Heightened avalanche conditions exist. Evaluate snow and terrain carefully.
