The City of Colorado Springs and the U.S. Forest Service has announced plans to build a permanent airtanker base at the Colorado Springs Airport—a move that will support aerial firefighting efforts in the Rocky Mountain Region and surrounding areas.

The base will support even the largest airtankers and will allow multiple airtankers to reload at once.

The Forest Service and Colorado Springs Airport will share the cost for construction, estimated at $20 million.  Construction of the new base will begin this summer.
