Francis James “Jim” Schmotz, age 96, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2026, in Buena Vista, Colorado.
Jim lived a long and wonderfully diverse life, filled with family, hard work, adventure, and a deep appreciation for the simple things. He spent much of his career in the Kansas City, Missouri area working in the art and photography business with Moyer-Crandall Studios.
Later, Jim and his wife, Joann, made their home in the rural town of DeSoto, Kansas, where they embraced a life close to the land. On their wooded property, Jim kept bees, tended five vegetable gardens, harvested grapes from his vineyard, and enjoyed the bounty of their apple, plum, and peach trees. Together, Jim and Joann raised their two children, Vanessa and Tim.
In retirement, Jim and Joann decided to head west, settling in the Buena Vista area where they traded the open plains for the clear, cool mountain air and breathtaking views of Colorado. They embraced their new surroundings and the slower pace of mountain life. They enjoyed frequent evenings out at restaurants in Salida and Buena Vista, loved watching the snow fall in the winter, and made many wonderful friends along the way.
Jim found joy in his home, his family, his friendships, and the beauty around him. He lived a full and meaningful 96 years, leaving behind a life rich with experiences and memories that will continue through the family and loved ones he leaves behind.
His life was well lived, his memories will be cherished, and his legacy will carry on through the generations who follow.
