Chaffee County is inviting the community to weigh in on the proposed projects identified through the Safer Roadways for All (SS4A) initiative before the plan is finalized by Oct. 1st. The draft findings and a proposed list of county-wide roadways safety projects have just been released and are available for public review at https://bit.ly/safe-roadways-map
An interactive online map shows the proposed locations and safety recommendations that have been identified through the SS4A project to date. Chaffee County road users are asked to share their feedback and comment directly on specific projects – including letting the County know if something is missing. This round of public feedback will help take these initial recommendations to a final plan.
An analysis of eight years of crash data (2017-2024) found that Chaffee County roads average 335 crashes every year – nearly one a day – including 99 injuries, 16 serious injuries, and 4 fatalities annually. One out of every seven of these severe crashes involved a motorcyclist, and one out of every 12 involved a pedestrian or bicyclist. Notably, 33% of all crashes countywide were wildlife-vehicle collisions. The SS4A Action Plan sets Chaffee County up to pursue implementation funding for the infrastructure projects identified through this process. This project is funded through a $440,000 grant from the US Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program to support planning, infrastructure, behavioral, and operational initiatives to prevent death and serious injury on county roads and highways, with the goal of zero fatal or serious injury crashes by 2045.
