Organizers of the Royal Gorge Whitewater Festival have announced that this weekend’s event in Cañon City has been canceled.
Festival organizers said the decision was made because of the multiple wildfires burning throughout the region and concerns about placing additional demands on volunteers and emergency response personnel already assisting with wildfire operations.
Officials said they could not, in good conscience, ask volunteers and first responders to take on additional responsibilities while wildfire activity continues across southern Colorado.
The annual festival, which celebrates whitewater sports on the Arkansas River, was scheduled to take place this weekend in Cañon City.
