Salida, CO — As Independence Day approaches, the City of Salida is announcing that there will be no City fireworks display this year due to current fire restrictions and elevated risk of unintended ignitions. This decision was made in coordination with Wildfire Chief Bainbridge of the Salida Fire Department and reflects a shared, responsible commitment to protecting residents, visitors, and the surrounding landscape

Current conditions make it especially important that everyone avoid activities that could start a fire. Even a single spark from fireworks, open flame, or improperly discarded smoking materials can spread quickly in dry grass and vegetation. The City is urging all residents and visitors to celebrate responsibly and choose safe, non-fire-related ways to enjoy the holiday.

The cancellation applies to the professional fireworks display traditionally organized by the Salida Fire Department and launched from Tenderfoot Mountain at dusk on July 4. While the annual display is a valued community tradition, public safety must come first this year. The City believes canceling the display is the most responsible course of action under the current conditions.

“Given the conditions we are seeing right now, even a small spark could have serious consequences,” said Wildfire Chief Bainbridge. “Canceling fireworks this year is a responsible, proactive decision to protect lives, homes, natural resources, and our first responders. We are asking everyone to celebrate in ways that do not create fire risk and to help us keep Salida safe.”

The use of personal exploding fireworks is strictly prohibited within the City of Salida. The City asks everyone to help reduce fire risk by following these safety reminders:

  • Do not use personal fireworks, firecrackers, bottle rockets, Roman candles, or other exploding aerial devices.
  • Avoid open flames and any outdoor activity that could create sparks, especially in dry or grassy areas.
  • Dispose of cigarettes and smoking materials safely and never throw them on the ground or from a vehicle.
  • Keep vehicles off dry grass and follow all posted closures, restrictions, and emergency instructions.
  • Report smoke, flames, or unsafe fire activity immediately by calling 911.

While fireworks will not take place, there are still many great ways to celebrate the Fourth of July in Salida. Residents and visitors are encouraged to enjoy the Independence Day Parade, live music in the park, and community gatherings throughout the holiday.

Let’s work together to keep this Independence Day safe, enjoyable, and respectful for everyone. By following local regulations, avoiding fireworks, and making responsible choices, we can protect Salida and the surrounding area.
