Leadville has been awarded a $492,000 grant from the United States Environmental Protection Agency to help rehabilitate the city’s former middle school.
The funding will be used to remove asbestos from the building as part of an environmental cleanup effort.
Once remediation is complete, city officials plan to redevelop the site into a community center offering indoor recreation, community gathering spaces, and a variety of public programs and activities.
Officials say the grant is an important step toward transforming the former school into a community asset that will serve Leadville residents for years to come.
