After seven years of service on the Buena Vista School Board, Brett Mitchell announced his resignation Monday evening.
In his resignation statement, Mitchell said he believes schools should remain free from politics and expressed concern that the school board was being used as a political platform.
Mitchell also referenced the board’s recent vote recognizing Pride Month, stating that the measure was brought forward without advance notice and was rushed to a vote without sufficient discussion.
In a video of his resignation, later shared on the Heart of the Rockies Radio Facebook page, Mitchell also alleged that the board has been working to change district policies and claimed that a board work session scheduled for tomorrow is intended to rebrand the district.
In response, fellow board member Casey Martin posted on social media disputing those claims, calling them misrepresentations and false accusations.
The differing statements reflect an ongoing public disagreement among board members regarding district priorities and recent board actions.
