The Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles is warning vehicle owners about a scam in which third-party “helpers” illegally gain ownership of vehicles while claiming to assist with registration or title issues.

According to the DMV, scammers often target individuals who do not have standard identification documents. They may offer to act as a power of attorney or ask to be added to a vehicle title in order to “help” facilitate registration.

Officials warn that once another person’s name is added to a vehicle title, that individual may become a legal owner of the vehicle and could potentially sell, tow, or take possession of it without the original owner’s consent.

The DMV advises vehicle owners to avoid relying on third parties for title or registration assistance and instead work directly through official channels.

To help protect ownership rights, officials say obtaining a valid Colorado driver license or identification card is an important first step. The state offers identification documents regardless of immigration status, eliminating the need to rely on outside individuals for vehicle registration assistance.

The DMV encourages anyone with questions about vehicle titles or registration requirements to contact the agency directly before signing any paperwork.
