The Colorado Department of Transportation is reminding motorists to do their part to help prevent human-caused wildfires along Colorado roadways.

According to CDOT, more than 90 percent of wildfires in Colorado are started by people. Many of those fires can be traced to everyday driving activities that create sparks or heat capable of igniting dry vegetation.

Common causes of roadside fires include overheated brakes, sparks from dragging trailer chains, tire failures, vehicle malfunctions, and cigarettes thrown from vehicle windows.

Transportation officials encourage drivers to regularly inspect their vehicles and trailers, ensure chains are properly secured, and dispose of smoking materials responsibly. With dry conditions affecting much of the state, even a small spark can quickly develop into a dangerous wildfire.

CDOT says taking a few simple precautions can help protect communities, public lands, and travelers during Colorado’s fire season.
