Dog-friendly community fundraiser supports homeless pets in Chaffee County and beyond.
BUENA VISTA, Colo. — Ark-Valley Humane Society (AVHS) invites animal lovers of all ages to lace up their running shoes, leash up their dogs, and join the 9th Annual Tails on the Trail 5K Run/Walk for Animals on Sunday, May 31st, 2026.
This beloved dog-friendly and family-friendly community event begins at 10:00am on the scenic Tenderfoot Trails of S Mountain in Salida and concludes with a celebratory After Party at the Salida SteamPlant. Proceeds from the event directly benefit the homeless animals and life-saving programs of Ark-Valley Humane Society.
Now in its ninth year, Tails on the Trail has become one of AVHS’s signature annual fundraisers, bringing together runners, walkers, families, and four-legged companions for a morning of fun with purpose.
“Every year, Tails on the Trail reminds us how deeply this community cares about animals,” said Nikki Ritter, Executive Director of Ark-Valley Humane Society. “This event is more than just a race, it is a chance for people to come together, celebrate their love of pets, and directly support shelter animals who need safety, medical care, and a second chance. It’s also incredibly fun to see so many beloved dogs from across Chaffee County and beyond out on the trail, participating right alongside their owners; it really brings the whole spirit of the event to life.”
Early bird registration is open now through Wednesday, May 27th at www.ark-valley.org/events/tott. Early registration is $45 for adults, $30 for children ages 6–17, and free for children five and under. Day-of registration will also be available from 9:00-9:45 am located at the Denver & Rio Grande Western Caboose in the F Street parking lot, with registration fees increasing by $10.
Participants will enjoy a beautiful 5K course through the Tenderfoot area before crossing the finish line at the Salida SteamPlant, where the festivities continue. Race registration includes an event t-shirt (while supplies last), access to event photos, and admission to the event’s After Party featuring free food, face painting, and games.
