Jared Polis has officially proclaimed May as Wildfire Awareness Month, encouraging residents across Colorado to prepare for wildfire season and help prevent human-caused fires.

According to the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control, the state is entering the 2026 wildfire season with significant drought conditions, below-average snowpack, and warmer temperatures. Officials expect a normal fire threat during May as spring green-up begins, but warn that June and July are forecast to bring above-normal wildfire potential.

Residents are being encouraged to take simple, practical, and relatively low-cost steps to make homes and properties more wildfire ready. Officials also stress the importance of having an evacuation plan in place in case a wildfire threatens your area.
