Salida School District is pleased to announce the selection of the next Longfellow Elementary School Principal, Anne Sytsma. She will step in with the start of the 26-27 school year, as current LES Principal Cory Scheffel has decided to step away from an administrative role. He has recently accepted a position at Salida Middle School to serve as a paraprofessional next year, a shift he is very excited about.

Sytsma was selected after a thorough search and interview process lead by the LES leadership team with staff guidance and support. She has worked in education for 25 years and has served as an educational coach, directed a program supporting students with neurodiversity, taught and directed within college education departments and taught special education.

Her primary experience is in elementary and early childhood education where she has supported students, teachers, and families through formative years using a focus on social-emotional learning and transitions into Kindergarten. She works to develop strong, highly capable teams who reach their highest potential while also enjoying the work done together.

For the past four years she has served as a preschool director in Buena Vista, where she served the whole child and created learning experiences that are joyful, engaging, and rooted in curiosity and care for others.

“I am truly honored and excited to step into the role of principal at Longfellow Elementary School,” said Sytsma. “This opportunity feels especially meaningful and I look forward to joining a community that cares deeply about its kids. I have admired this school for several years and the culture that has been built here. I am eager to carry forward its strong legacy and traditions while supporting its continued growth.”

“I am thrilled to recommend Anne Sytsma as the next Principal of Longfellow Elementary School,” said Superintendent Dr. David Blackburn. “Anne brings 25 years of deep experience in education and has a proven track record of building highly capable teams, which is critical to our district’s focus on staff excellence.  We are confident she is the right leader to carry forward the strong legacy of Longfellow Elementary and guide its continued pursuit of excellence.”

“I believe every child should be known and loved and that strong partnerships with families are essential,” says Systma. “I am committed to building a school culture where students, staff, and families feel connected, supported, and inspired. I care deeply about this work, and I look forward to being accessible, present, and in relationship with this amazing community.
