The Chaffee County Landfill has partnered with Spring Back Colorado to launch a new mattress recycling program, giving residents an environmentally friendly way to dispose of old mattresses.

Through the program, mattresses are taken apart by hand so their materials can be reused instead of ending up in a landfill. The recycling process separates each component for a new purpose. Steel springs are melted down and reused, foam is repurposed into carpet padding, wood frames are chipped into mulch, and fibers are used for insulation and other industrial products.

Before dropping off a mattress, residents should make sure it is dry and free of mold and bed bugs, which are required conditions for recycling.
