The U.S. Forest Service is moving ahead with an updated camping management plan aimed at improving recreation experiences and protecting natural resources near Leadville, Buena Vista and Salida.

The first phases of the plan will focus on the Browns Creek area near Salida and the Clear Creek corridor west of Clear Creek Reservoir. Forest Service officials say work will begin this spring and summer, with staff conducting reviews of environmental and resource conditions to help determine where designated dispersed campsites should be located.

As part of the implementation process, visitors may notice new barriers and signage in certain areas. Some locations are also expected to receive new vault toilets to improve sanitation and reduce impacts on the landscape.

Despite the changes, regular dispersed camping will remain available throughout the review period, according to the Forest Service. Officials say the goal of the updated plan is to balance continued public access with long-term stewardship of the region’s natural resources.
