Powerful winds swept across Colorado’s high country yesterday, creating dangerous travel conditions and prompting multiple highway closures.
Highway 285 was shut down for most of the day between Fairplay and Bailey after wind gusts in the Park County community of Jefferson reached an estimated 75 mph. The Park County Sheriff’s Office reported whiteout conditions along the route, making travel nearly impossible.
Farther north, a stretch of I-25 near the Wyoming state line was also closed due to hazardous winds.
Forecasters warn that strong winds are expected to return today. Travelers are urged to check real-time road conditions before heading out by visiting cotrip.org.
