Betty Irene Veltrie, age 98 of Salida, passed away on March 17, 2025 at Columbine Manor Care Center in Salida. Mrs. Veltrie was born June 30, 1923 in Kentucky to Owen Edward and Laura S. (Foster) Gregory. She went to #2 Elementary school and graduated from Wayne County High School in 1944, she walked to school and home after school to do her chores. Before her mother got home, (her mother was a school teacher and her father was a barber in town). She was raised on a farm with her brothers and sister, growing a vegetable garden had fruit trees to process the fruit into jam and jellies. They also grew tobacco to sell to the tobacco companies (Prince Albert). She made all of the beds, which she hated and did the dishes when she got big enough to reach the standing on a stool. She came to Salida in 1945 to visit her sister, Delores Barnes who lived in Cleora and met her husband Bob Veltrie who she married the same year. She had 2 boys Ronnie Joe and Greg, Ronnie was born in 1948 and Greg in 1964. She was a volunteer at Salida Museum for 9 years and a member of the Rainbow Demonstration Club for 20 years which she was the secretary and treasurer. She enjoyed crocheting, making pictures out of sea shells and cooking for her family. She enjoyed talking to her friends on the telephone for hours, going for rides in the hills and the crazy things the boys did growing up. She was preceded in death by her husband and son Ronnie Joe, parents and all of her siblings. She is survived her son Greg, granddaughter Brittney Veltrie of Palm Springs, CA and many nieces and nephews in Salida, Kentucky and Illinois. A Celebration of Life is set for 10:00 AM Friday April 4, 2025 at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
