The Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents to a “brushing” scam affecting the area. Here’s how it works:

  • Unexpected Package: Individuals receive an item or gift in the mail that they did not order.
  • No Sender Information: The package has the recipient’s address but no details about the sender.
  • Dangerous QR Code: The package includes a QR code to scan, supposedly to reveal who sent the gift.

The Risk: Scanning the QR code allegedly gives scammers full access to the recipient’s phone, allowing them to steal personal and financial information.

How to Stay Safe

  • Do Not Scan Unknown QR Codes: Avoid scanning codes from unsolicited packages.
  • Report Suspicious Deliveries: Contact local authorities if you receive a suspicious package.
  • Monitor Your Accounts: Check for unauthorized transactions or changes to your accounts.

If you have concerns or need to report an incident, contact the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Office.
