| Upon arrival at AVHS, every animal that enters our care is provided with the necessary medical treatment in order to become available for adoption including exams, vaccines, medications, and spay/neuter surgeries. Some homeless pets need more help than others and require more extensive surgeries and procedures. Through our in-house medical program, we are able to provide this type of medical treatment and give shelter animals a second chance at life. We treat special medical cases often, but we are currently facing extremely difficult circumstances in the critical cases of Neo and Honey who recently arrived at AVHS within quick succession. Honey (pictured right): Honey came to AVHS after she jumped from a vehicle and broke her femur. She is having difficulty putting weight on her rear left leg. Honey has received x-rays and medical evaluations by our veterinarian and a canine orthopedic specialist. Due to the location of the break up near her hip, it has been determined that Honey will need a specialized surgery in order to repair her injury, with the hope of giving her the ability to walk normally again. Neo (pictured left): Running across roadways as a stray, Neo was sadly hit by a car, resulting in damage to his abdomen, a shattered femur, and a broken hip. After being brought to AVHS, we had to act quickly in order to give him a chance at surviving his critical injuries. As an initial step towards addressing Neo’s injuries he was brought to a local veterinary clinic where he received an extensive 3-hour surgery to begin repairs on his femur. Unfortunately, this is not the only medical treatment Neo will need to become stabilized. Neo currently requires intensive care as he cannot move about on his own. This care includes hand feeding, pottying assistance, daily blood work, continuous administration of IV fluids, and monitoring of his vitals. The progress he is making through this care is aimed towards stabilizing Neo’s condition to prepare him for the next step in his medical plan. He will require another extensive surgery to try and repair his broken hip. We hope that he can get to this next step in his treatment. Neo is currently in critical condition. We are doing all that we can to support him, but he remains critical. He is fighting and we will continue to fight with him. But we cannot do this alone. Neo and Honey’s critical surgeries are beyond what we are set up for in our in-house medical program. |
| We need your help to provide these extensive surgeries for Honey and Neo through our vet partners. Beyond these surgeries, costs of care include continuous vet check-ups, additional x-rays, ultrasounds, IV fluids, medications, and time-intensive support from AVHS staff. At this time, our estimate for the cost of providing Honey and Neo their respective surgeries and continued medical care is at least $9,200. |

We will keep you updated as much as we can on both Neo and Honey’s conditions, but also have to turn our focus to their care and the care of the many homeless animals currently at our shelter. We understand that not everyone is able to donate, but there are many ways you can help us during this difficult time: Honey is in need of a foster home while she receives medical treatment and recovers from surgery. She will need a unique home without other animals so that she can rest while she heals. If Neo is able to become stabilized, he will also benefit from a special foster home that will relieve the stress of the shelter environment. With 18 dogs currently in care, our shelter is nearing max capacity for dogs and we want to be able to continue to help animals that arrive in need at our door.
