Ernest Aloysius Thiel, II was born outside Chicago Illinois, September 3rd, 1936. He died at Homelake Veteran’s Home in Monte Vista, Colorado, June 1, 2024, at the age of 87.
Ernest was the 6th child of 7 siblings born to Dorothy and Ernest Thiel Senior. He served for 2 years in the Navy before attending Notre Dame University, graduating with a degree in Mathematics. He worked as a manufacturing consultant, helping companies and factories become more efficient. His job often brought him all over the country. Ernest also loved to travel and especially to hike. He spent time in places like, Connecticut, Vermont, California, Florida, and Germany, and ultimately settling in Salida, Colorado.
Ernest had 2 children with Linda Van Rye (West). He enjoyed hiking and traveling with his sons and grandchildren.
Ernest was a lover of books, the more obscure the better. He and his son John owned an online book business for several years. Ernest was a volunteer roller derby referee, a volunteer driver for Veteran’s services as well as a volunteer at the Salida Public Library where he especially liked to teach kids chess.
Ernest is pre-deceased by 5 of his 6 siblings, and by his son Christian.
Ernest is survived by his son John, John’s wife Hannah, and his grandchildren Dara, Seneca and Phineas.
