Avalanche danger is up in Colorado’s high country because of the snowstorm that just moved across the state.

Avalanche danger is high in the southern mountains and moderate further north. No matter the level, any elevated avalanche risk requires extra caution. Careful snowpack evaluation, cautious route finding, and conservative decision making are essential.

Since 1950, avalanches have killed more people in Colorado than any other natural hazard, and in the United States, Colorado accounts for one-third of all avalanche deaths.
