The Florence City Council has appointed former District Attorney Kaitlin Turner as its new city attorney.

Florence terminated its former attorney, Matt Krob, on March 7.

Councilwoman Melissa Hardy read a statement and then made the motion to fire Krob, which was unanimously approved by the Florence City Council.

Hardy said, “In Florence’s pursuit to have a brighter future, one of the most basic things this council has to do is remain vigilant in evaluating the employees that we oversee.  Currently, I have drawn the conclusion that we should be concerned about the performance of our city attorney.  Over the last six months, I feel that his response to city staff and to the council has been lethargic.  I think his legal advice at times has been inadequate, and I think he has struggles to fulfill the directives that he has been given by this council.”

The Florence City Council has been working the last six months to investigate accusations of sexual harassment by former City Manager Mike Patterson against city staff and to rebuild public trust after Patterson’s termination last August.

Turner said she will monitor the lawsuits that currently are in the hands of the City’s insurance carrier and will monitor the investigation into city finances by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, which was initiated by council.
