A Colorado man is in Park County Jail for the 1982 deaths of two young women near Breckenridge.

70-year-old Alan Lee Phillips of Dumont was arrested for investigation on murder charges in the killings of 21-year-old Annette Schnee and 29-year-old Barbara Oberholtzer, who went missing January 6, 1982.

Court records show Phillips also faces charges of kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon in each case.

Arrest only charges have been filed and Phillips remains in custody at the Park County Jail. He is expected to be formally charged March 8. More information about how investigators were led to Phillips is not yet available.

Phillips’ arrest marks one step toward closure for the families of Oberholtzer and Schnee, 39 years after they died.

The two women had no apparent connection to each other, but both worked in Breckenridge and were believed to be hitchhiking home when they disappeared.

Oberholtzer’s body was found the next afternoon in a snow drift on Hoosier Pass. Annette remained missing for the next six months, until a young boy found her body in a creek near Fairplay.

Both women were shot to death.
