Firefighters are making progress on the YMCA Fire.
The YMCA Fire was mapped at 293 acres yesterday. Through the day, four hand crews took advantage of retardant laid down by aircraft to establish control lines along the fires edge. Their efforts resulted in containment of 30 percent of the fire’s perimeter. Helicopters continued making bucket drops of water to cool off hot spots no accessible to ground crews.
Although containment is increasing, smoke and flames will continue to be visible from Canon City and neighboring areas.
The YMCA Fire started Wednesday afternoon and is burning on BLM lands 4 miles southwest of Canon City. No structures are threatened at this time and no evacuations are in place.
Multiple agencies are on the scene with both air and ground resources.
Lightning has been determined to be the cause of the fire.
