It is officially rattlesnake season in Colorado.

Many are venturing out on area trails to enjoy the nice weather and get some much-needed time out of the house.  When you do, be aware of your surroundings and be on the watch for rattlesnakes.

If you encounter a rattlesnake, you are advised to first, freeze in place.  You often hear a rattlesnake before you see it.  Attempting to move away could move you closer.

Seek to establish a safe distance.  Rattlesnakes can strike to a distance of half their body, so put at least five feet between you and the snake.

And finally, leave the snake alone.  One-third of snakebite victims are a result of trying to kill or handle the snake.
